Former Celtic star Dedryck Boyata's Hertha Berlin debut ends in more misery

Former Celtic star Dedryck Boyata has finally made his Hertha Berlin debut but it ended in another defeat for the German club.

The Belgian signed on a free transfer after four years at Celtic but hasn't played since suffering a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Rangers in March.

It meant his new life in Germany was severely disrupted but his side have now slipped do the bottom of the Bundesliga.

Boyata's last appearance for Neil Lennon's men was in the game against Rangers and he suffered another setback in training when he injured a thigh and his Hertha debut was delayed until this weekend where he completed 80 minutes against Mainz.

But his side conceded a last minute goal after he was subbed and now languish in bottom place in the Bundesliga after picking up just one point in four game.

Boyata said: "I'm positive despite the defeat because it was good to get back playing again for me personally.

"But it was a frustrating debut for me bacause we lost a goal in the last minute.

"It's not good enough for a team like Hertha to be in our position and we need to repair the damage next week against Paderborn."

And his comeback was praised by Hertha boss Ante Covic.

He said: "We must not forger Dedryck has been injured for a long time.

"But he's a leader and you saw that out there. His physical attributes are tremendous.

"It won't be long until you see the best of him."
