Former Celtic star axed by Champions League club after home capitulation leads to big decision

RB Leipzig have parted company with manager Domenico Tedesco and Andreas Hinkel ahead of their Champions League matches with Celtic.

Former German international Hinkel played for the Hoops for three years between 2008-2011 and a reunion with his former side this autumn when Celtic and Leipzig lock horns in Group F was on the cards. But following a calamitous 4-1 loss to fellow group competitors Shakhtar Donetsk, the Bundesliga club have decided to head in a new direction.

Hinkel, along with fellow assistant coach Max Urwantschky, have gone alongside the boss, who's side started their domestic league season with one win in five matches. An RB Leipzig statement reads: "RB Leipzig have parted company with Domenico Tedesco with immediate effect. Assistant coaches Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky have also left the club. RB Leipzig will announce his successor in due course. Thank you for our time together!

"Thank you for the DFB Pokal win - that will always remain your title too! Wishing all the best to Domenico Tedesco, Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky!"

The replacement in Germany is expected to be Marco Rose, who is not a stranger to the Celtic faithful, after he put on a Hoops scarf and hat after his RB Salzburg team beat the Hoops in a 2018 Europa League group stage match.

Rose left Borussia Dortmund in the summer. Ange Postecoglou's side are looking for their first Champions League points in the group as a positive performance against Real Madrid still ended in a 3-0 loss.
