Former Celtic Rajon Rondo may explore coaching after playing career

If former Boston Celtics (and current Los Angeles Laker) point guard Rajon Rondo is the next Celtics alumnus to become a head coach, it’ll be something people have expected for some time.

Widely regarded as a basketball genius for his ability to see layers of the game that elude his peers, the Kentucky product has long been assumed to be a natural coach.

Speaking with an unnamed league source, Heavy.com’s Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson shared their thoughts on the Celtic champion’s coaching outlook post-playing career.

“He wants to take a similar approach that Jason Kidd and Steve Nash took to head coaching,” related Robinson’s source.

“After retirement, he’ll surely be on the track and quickly. Whether that’s in a front office position or a head coaching position, he’s ready. Playing point guard for years and playing alongside the greats like Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce Ray Allen, Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and Anthony Davis makes him qualified.”

“His muse was observing great coaches like Doc Rivers and Nancy Lieberman,” they added.

Rondo himself has previously stated as much, noting he has an “interest in being a GM, president maybe coach” at a press conference in 2018.

“I do love teaching the game, but I also love dissecting the game and figuring out ways to beat people at the top,” he added.

Whether or not the beloved Boston floor general wins his second ring Sunday evening — or at all — we at the Celtics Wire can easily see Rondo slide into a suit and loafers in the sideline, giving Brad Stevens headaches one day soon with remixed versions of Stevens’ own ATO plays.
