Former Celtic director claims Dermot Desmond wouldn't 'stand in the way' of fan takeover

Brian Dempsey believes supporters are primed to make the Celtic a "people's club again" after a nightmare season on and off the park.

The 70-year-old swept into power at Parkhead alongside Fergus McCann in 1994 and believes the time is now for supporters to push for real change once again.

Celtic's botched 10 In A Row bid was an unmitigated disaster as rivals Rangers romped to glory and became the earliest Premiership champions in history.

That led to manager Neil Lennon leaving and chief executive Peter Lawwell set to retire in the summer with rugby chief Dominic McKay taking the reins.

Supporters have been left miffed by a season to forget with the Celtic Trust mobilising and pushing for a share issue to keep season ticket money in the club.

Principal shareholder Dermot Desmond is currently looking for a new manager but Dempsey claims the Irishman would listen if he received the right offer to walk away.

Desmond has received criticism from sections of the Parkhead support over a lack of visibility but former managers and board members speak candidly of man who is consumed by Celtic.

But in an interview with the Times, Dempsey said: "I don't believe there's any question that Dermot Desmond, assuming he got the right money for his shares, is a man who would stand in the way of Celtic's expansion.

"So it's down to the supporters to come together again, sit down at the table with Dermot, produce their plans and offer to buy him and the others out, making Celtic a people's club again.

"They could then restart for the generations to come with a ten-year plan for growth as a footballing institution and a social institution.

"It's another uphill journey but it can be done because once you galvanise public opinion and the Celtic community then I believe that anything is possible."
