Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert leaves Ipswich after ruling himself out of Hoops job

Former Celtic captain Paul Lambert has left his position as manager of English side Ipswich Town, the League One side have confirmed.

The 51-year-old ruled himself out of the running to replace Neil Lennon as manager of the Parkhead side last week amid rumours he was to leave the Suffolk outfit as part of a takeover that would see an American consortium take control of the club.

Former Wigan manager Paul Cook is set to be named as the new Tractor Boys boss, according to early reports, after Lambert departed Portman Road on Sunday evening by "mutual consent".

Lambert, who took charge of the 2-1 win over Doncaster Rovers on Saturday, had come under increasing pressure from the Ipswich fans, some of whom set fire to signage outside the team's training ground after a poor run earlier this month.

The Scotland international lifted eight trophies in his time at Celtic Park, including four top flight titles and two Scottish Cups in over 270 appearances.

He also captained the side which reached the Uefa Cup final in 2003 when Martin O'Neill's men were agonisingly beaten by Porto in Seville.

Lambert had been among the early names mentioned to replace former teammate Lennon, who resigned last week, but said he was not interested in the position.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "I played for eight years, but I left the Glasgow scene a long time ago.

"That's not my life anymore. I don't want to tarnish the good feelings I have with the Celtic fans. We won a hell of a lot, stopping Rangers winning ten in a row in 1998. That was an incredible achievement.

"Maybe I'll go back as a fan, that's all I can say.
