Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers fails to reach Champions League as Leicester suffer Manchester United defeat

Brendan Rodgers has failed to secure a Champions League spot for Leicester.

The former Celtic manager's side were second top at the end of 2019, 11 points ahead of a Manchester United team who were sitting in eighth.

A run of just five wins in 18 Premier League matches since the turn of the year had seen Leicester fall out of the top four, and the fight for a place in Europe's top competition came down to the last day as Leicester welcomed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United side to the King Power on the Premier League's final day.

Leicester needed a victory today, but went 1-0 down after 71 minutes when Bruno Fernandes sent Kasper Schmeichel the wrong way with a penalty. Jesse Lingard added a second deep into injury time and it finished 2-0.

That result, coupled with Chelsea's 2-0 victory against Wolves, meant that Rodgers' side finished fifth with Chelsea in third and United in fourth.

The Foxes will play in next season's Europa League, but failure to reach the Champions League having been in such a good position at the start of the year will come as a bitter blow for Rodgers.

The Northern Irishman took over at Celtic in 2016 and won consecutive Premiership titles, before leaving for Leicester in February 2019.
