Former Celtic and Motherwell striker Scott McDonald lands first job in management

Former Motherwell and Celtic striker Scott McDonald has taken his first steps into management with Australian side Gold Coast Knights - linking up with his son who plays for the club.

The 38-year-old had two spells at Fir Park either side of a big move to Celtic, which saw him score important goals in the Champions League, win a top flight title and a League Cup.

The ex-Aussie international also played for Dundee United and Partick Thistle during his stint in Scotland and has hung up his boost after playing for his native Western Sydney Wanderers last season.

McDonald, who famously gave the Fir Park faithful - and Rangers fans - a day to remember with his late double on Helicopter Sunday to deny Celtic the league title in 2005, now takes on a new challenge in the National Premier League Queensland with the Knights.

His son plays for the club and that was a big attraction for him taking the role.

McDonald said: "I’ve always had ambitions to get into coaching.

"I’ve always wanted to be a manager and this is an unbelievable role to take on first-up.

"My son is at the club as well so I have a vested interested in the club and they know that."

During his time with the Steelmen, McDonald made almost 200 appearances in claret and amber over the two spells, netting 66 goals, and helped them to a League Cup final in 2005, where they lost to 5-1 to Rangers.
