Former Celtic and Hibs star Anthony Stokes sensational East Kilbride switch link addressed by manager

East Kilbride boss Stevie Aitken has opened the door for a sensational swoop for Anthony Stokes.

Kilby have been on a huge recruitment-drive in the fifth tier of Scottish football bringing in the likes of Chris Erskine and Paul Paton so far this summer.

Aitken has addressed rumours linking the former Celtic and Hibs striker with a move to the Lowland League club.

The gaffer admits he would be keen to recruit Stokes who has been without a club since leaving Irainian outfit Persepolis earlier this year.

Aitken told Lanarkshire Live Sport : “I’ve not spoken to him, but would we speak to him if we could bring something to it? Yes we would.

“If we could make a pitch and a deal could be done, we would do it.

“There is no doubt that if we think this is the player we want then we would make the move.

“We have to be realistic enough to realise that Anthony Stokes is an international player.

“He will have a host of clubs looking at him. There might be a rumour going about, but it’s certainly not someone I’ve spoken to at this point.”

Stokes would join New Zealand cap Steven Old, full-back Richard Kirwan, ex Airdrie man Kyle Wilkie, defender Lewis Kidd and former Motherwell and Clyde forward Darren Smith, as well as marquee signings Erskine and Paton  at the K-Park.

Matt McGinley, Paul Woods, Anton Brady, Craig Malcolm and Sean Winter have also penned extensions to their deals with the Lanarkshire men.

Aitken notes there are some key areas he would like to strengthen: “We’ve done a lot of work and a lot of recruitment already so far since we came in.

“We kept the players that we wanted to and have added quality to that.

“There is a lot of work to do and we’re not finished yet, but there will be another three or four signings coming in that we are working hard to get done.

“We will be looking to add another central defender, and a goalkeeper as we only have one at the club.

“After that maybe a left-back. Things change though, and if a good player became available that can add to the squad I’ll go and sign him.”
