Former Cardiff City star Joe Ledley emerges as Newport County transfer target after training with Bluebirds

Newport County manager Mike Flynn is hopeful of signing former Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ledley.

Ledley has been without a club since parting ways with Championship outfit Derby County in January, with many calling for City boss Neil Warnock to take a punt on him.

Those calls were only made louder when WalesOnline exclusively revealed the free agent has been training with the Bluebirds in recent weeks.

However we were told it was simply a gesture of goodwill from the club and they were not interested in offering Ledley a contract.

But it now appears Ledley, 32, is inching closer to signing for League Two outfit Newport County, with Flynn revealing he has been in regular contact with the player and will meet next week to discuss a potential deal.

"Can we get him? I am not quite sure," Flynn told the BBC .

"He asked me for tickets, he's come to the game, I've spoken to Joe quite regularly.

"Is there an opportunity there? I don't know, I'll know more next week. I'll speak to Joe and if there is anything, then he will come in and train first.

"He's been training with a Championship club [Cardiff] and he keeps himself in good shape, there is no fat on him.

"Is it close? No. Have I have spoken to him? Yes. Joe's only 32 and he's definitely still got a few years in him.

"Theoretically signing him is not ruled out, no. But I still think Joe could play at a higher level. So we will see."

Ledley endured a turbulent summer, with moves to Dutch side Fortuna Sittard and Cypriot club Pafos FC inexplicably hitting the buffers.

Now, however, it looks like a move a little closer to home might be on the horizon.

Meanwhile, Flynn also confirmed former Swansea City striker Wilfried Bony is still training with the club, but poured cold water over the prospect of tabling an offer to sign him.

"Wilfried Bony is still here, he is in the building," Flynn added.

"The prospect of signing him is absolutely zero, he has had a few offers and he is just waiting on the right one.

"He is good to have around the place. The players should all be watching him in training, because the intensity and amount of work he puts in, is first class.

"Everything he does he does at a tempo so they should all be watching good habits and taking them on board."
