Former Cardiff City star Joe Ledley agrees to sign with Championship rivals Charlton Athletic

Former Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ledley signed for Charlton Athletic on a short-term deal.

The Wales international has been out of action since January, when he had his contract at Derby County terminated by mutual consent.

He has endured a turbulent few months, flirting with moves to clubs in Holland and Cyprus, before returning back to the Welsh capital to train under Neil Warnock at Cardiff City.

Now, though, Ledley, who played over 250 times for his hometown club, has signed up for the Bluebirds' Championship rivals and is relishing the opportunity to get back out on the pitch again.

“I’m happy to be back in football and playing again,” he said.

“I want to play as many games as possible, to come here, play football and show everyone what I can do. It’s a good club to be at, they are a great bunch of lads, I know a few of them here and they’ve welcomed me straight away.”

Ledley joins Tom Lockyer, Jonny Williams and Adam Matthews as the fourth Welshman in Lee Bowyer's squad.

The Addicks have been hit terribly by injury woes in recent months and the signing of Ledley is welcome news to Bowyer, who had sought to bolster the ranks after being with out 14 senior players for last week's clash with Sheffield Wednesday.

“He has experience, he has been in the game a long time, he’s an international player," Bowyer said of Ledley.

"He’ll come in again and help the young lads that are in around it. I’m over the moon to have him on board.”

Ledley, who has been training with the club all week, will be available to make his debut this weekend when the squad travel to Middlesbrough.
