Former Cambuslang Rangers manager Paul McColl threatened referee and used homophobic language - but cleared of assault

A former Cambuslang football manager threatened a referee and hurled homophobic slurs at him.

Paul McColl, 50, shouted and swore at Calum Scott during a match between Glenafton Athletic and Cambuslang Rangers – who he used to manage – on December 22, 2018 .

However, when he appeared in court last week, the controversial former Lang manager was cleared of assaulting the official.

McColl, who lives in Rutherglen, entered the pitch at Loch Park Football Stadium, New Cumnock, and repeatedly approached Mr Scott, behaved in an aggressive manner towards him, shouted and swore at him and uttered threatening, abusive and homophobic remarks.

The former gaffer  also uttered threatening remarks regarding Mr Scott to others.

He admitted the charge  at Ayr Sheriff Court and will now be sentenced next month.

McColl was cleared of assaulting the 29-year-old referee – allegedly striking him on the body with his hand – during the ill-tempered clash.

The incident initially saw McColl suspended by the club, then subsequently sacked.
