Former caged hens need Edinburgh residents to adopt them and give them a happy new home

The British Hen Welfare Trust are running a rehoming event in Peebles near Edinburgh on 12 September.

The nationwide organisation find caring homes for thousands of commercial laying hens that would otherwise be slaughtered

They have hen collection points all over the country and rehomings take place on a regular basis - with the next one near Edinburgh scheduled on 12 September in Peebles in the Scottish Borders. Over 400 hens will need to be rehomed then.

The charity do not make a charge for the hens, but they do ask for a donation to cover what they pay the farmers, also vet fees, fuel, phone bills, trailers, equipment and feed.

Donations also support their ongoing work in campaigning for a free-range future for all hens. They say "most people are kind enough to give around £5 per hen."

If you haven't adopted hens from the charity before, you need to register here. Then, once you've completed online registration please call BHWT on 01884 860084 to complete the second stage.
