Former cage fighter died after fall from tower block

A respected sportsman and former cage fighter fell to his death from a tower block, an inquest was told.

Kevin Axworthy, a former mixed martial arts competitor, was found by a postman as he was on his rounds in Kirkby, on June 22.

The 39-year-old had fallen from a balcony on Roughwood Drive in Northwood.

A hearing at Bootle Town Hall was told how Mr Axworthy had been taking cocaine and became agitated.

Three days after he died, Mr Axworthy's uncle posted a tribute and picture online.

He said: "The family is devastated and shocked.

"The picture is how many will remember him as a sportsman and very fit man.

He added: "May perpetual light shine upon him."

On the day of his death the dad, who was born in Garston, had woken his son asking him for the drug, coroner's officer Albert Howard-Murphy said.

The last comment he made to his son was "look after the dog," the inquest was told.

Mr Howard-Murphy said Mr Axworthy's son told emergency services his dad had started taking cocaine over the last few days before his death.

He said he had only started taking the Class A drug in December 2019 and was not known to mental health services.

Toxicology tests later confirmed the presence of cocaine and ecstasy.

Police have confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Axworthy's death.

The cause of the security guard's death was confirmed as multiple injuries.

Coroner Julie Goulding said: "Mr Axworthy took his own life by jumping from the area above the balcony with the intention of doing so."

She recorded a verdict of suicide.

Mr Axworthy once appeared on ITV, fighting at the Olympia venue on West Derby Road.

He previously trained as a paratrooper.

Coroner Goulding asked the coroner's officer: "Could you offer the family my sincere condolences."
