Former cabbie used motorhome cannabis crop to 'self-medicate'

A former taxi driver who self-medicated for arthritis with cannabis has been fined.

Dean Weaver gave up his job after developing the condition and lived in a motorhome.

Bristol Crown Court heard police who visited him found a small number of cannabis plants.

Weaver, 52, whose address was given as Lower Bristol Road in Twerton, Bath, pleaded guilty to producing and possessing cannabis in tubs and tins.

Judge William Hart fined him £200 and told him to pay £150 court costs.

He told Weaver: "You pleaded guilty to producing a small number of cannabis plants and possessing cannabis.

"You are free to leave the dock.

"Don't come back."

James Ward, prosecuting, said police recovered eight cannabis plants, Weaver was interviewed and made full admissions to police.

Robin Shellard, defending via Skype due to coronavirus lockdown, told the court: "He took cannabis to deal with the pain.

"He no longer does so.

"He lives on Universal Credit and has little means.

"He says he would be capable of unpaid work. He would prefer a fine."

Weaver denied a charge of having a prohibited firearm, authorities decided it was not in the public interest to have a trial and this charge was left to lie on file.
