Former Bristol Rovers winger linked with move to Scotland as Preston North End consider sale

Former Bristol Rovers winger Josh Ginnelly is being lined up for a move to Scotland this summer.

Scottish Championship side Hearts are plotting a deal for the 23-year-old, who joined the Gas on loan from Preston North End in January.

Hearts boss Robbie Neilson is eager to add speed on the flanks after he missed out on the signing of Sam Nicholson, who coincidentally turned down the Jambos to move to the Mem earlier this summer.

Ginnelly has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Deepdale, with The Scotsman reporting Hearts have been monitoring him for some time.

It remains to be seen whether Hearts will pursue a permanent or loan agreement with Preston, but Ginnelly is likely to be available this summer.

A return to Rovers seemed a possible option earlier in the transfer window, but with Gas boss Ben Garner agreeing a fresh loan deal for Derby County winger Jayden Mitchell-Lawson in addition to the Nicholson signing and the shift to a 3-4-2-1 formation there does not appear to be a place for Ginnelly at the Mem.

Ginnelly scored once – the winner in Garner’s long-awaited first victory against Blackpool in February – in nine games for the Gas.

The Englishman has also had spells with Burnley, Walsall, Tranmere Rovers, Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town in his short career thus far.
