Former Bristol Rovers striker set to complete Ireland move in blow to Darrell Clarke at Walsall

Rory Gaffney is set to return to his native Ireland with Shamrock Rovers.

The Irish Mirror report that the former Bristol Rovers striker was set to see Shamrock Rovers in action against Waterford on Saturday prior to completing a medical at the League of Ireland club.

Once international clearance is confirmed, then Gaffney is expected to move to the Dublin-based club on a permanent deal.

Gaffney departed the Gas for big-spending Salford City in 2018, helping them to win promotion to League Two last season.

Yet last summer saw him link up with former Rovers boss Darrell Clarke again as he moved on loan to Clarke's new club Walsall.

He has played 15 times in League Two for the Saddlers, scoring once, but has been out of action since January 7.

Last week, Clarke chalked Gaffney's absence up to an injury, but he now looks set to leave the club - despite having signed on loan at the Bescot Stadium for the whole season.

With the transfer window shut, it could well be a blow for Clarke, who will be unable to sign any replacement, unless he dips into the free agent market.

Even as recently as last week, in the build-up to Walsall's clash with Port Vale at the weekend, Clarke was talking up Gaffney's return from injury, suggesting the 30-year-old could have a big part to play in the end-of-season run-in.

He said to the Express and Star: "Gaffney, who came in on loan, struggled at the start and has been carrying an injury for a period of time now.

"We’re hoping that when he comes back in fresh that he gives us another option as well.

"You need four good strikers at this level and obviously he hasn’t started his Walsall career great, but we’re hoping he adds some ingredients towards the end of the season."

Yet it now appears that his Saddlers career is at an end, and a move to Shamrock Rovers is in the offing.
