Former Bristol Rovers midfielder Phil Purnell opens up on his time at the Gas talking to Subs Bench

The latest edition of Subs Bench has landed.

The popular  Made In Bristol show  has arrived on Bristol Live with Richard Latham and Nigel Turner interviewing a host of former Bristol Rovers and Bristol City players from across the generations.

This week we have the second part of an in-depth interview with former Pirates midfielder Phil Purnell.

Bristol-born Purnell, now 54, joined Bristol Rovers in September 1985 having played for local sides Forest Green Rovers, Frome Town and Mangotsfield United.

He spent seven and half years at the Gas, scoring 22 goals, until his career was ended abruptly when he broke his leg in 1993.

But there were plenty of highs during his time at the club with Rovers winning the Division Three title in 1989-90 when Purnell was part of a team which included Steve Yates, Geoff Twentyman, Ian Holloway, Gary Penrice and Geoff Dunford.

You can watch the full interview at the top of the page.

And you can follow the Subs Bench team via their Twitter account and by liking the Facebook page to keep up to date with their latest episode.
