Former Bristol Rovers manager Paul Tisdale takes charge of League Two club

Former Bristol Rovers manager Paul Tisdale has taken charge of League Two strugglers Stevenage.

The 48-year-old takes charge of Stevenage in 21st place, three points clear of the relegation zone after the sacking of Alex Revell earlier this month.

Tisdale has a wealth of experience in League Two, spending 12 years in charge of Exeter City and winning promotion with MK Dons in his first season in 2019.

Stepping up to League One has proved the challenge for the Maltese-born coach, who survived less than three months in charge of the Gas and he was sacked three months into the League One campaign with MK Dons.

Tisdale was appointed by Rovers in November 2020, succeeding Ben Garner. Tisdale took the reins with the Gas in 18th place in the third tier, but he won just three of his 15 league games in charge and he was relieved of his duties in February.

His handling of the January transfer window, when Rovers failed to sign a desperately-needed goalscorer to boost their survival hopes, has received intense scrutiny as a pivotal moment in the club's relegation season.

But Stevenage are confident Tisdale is the man to lead them up the League Two table after a poor start to the season.

Chairman Phil Wallace said: “We needed to bring EFL experience and a fresh start into our Club, so Paul fits that perfectly.

"He had an impressive 12 years at Exeter and was recognized as one of the brightest managers in the game, so his move to MK Dons and a promotion in his first season was not a surprise.

"He has developed a long line of talented players at Exeter that have moved up to higher levels. We have got a good squad of players and we are looking forward to Paul creating a winning environment.

"We have funds available to strengthen in January if Paul feels we need to do that”.

Tisdale had been linked with a number of vacancies since his departure from BS7, including Leyton Orient, England under-21s and Forest Green Rovers.

Rovers, currently five points and five places clear of Stevenage in the standings, travel to the Lamex Stadium on February 19.
