Former Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke now overwhelming favourite to take over at League Two Yeovil Town

Former Bristol Rovers manager Darrell Clarke looks increasingly likely to take over at League Two strugglers Yeovil Town, if bookmakers are to be believed.

After the sacking of Darren Way on Sunday in the wake of their 2-0 defeat to MK Dons, Clarke, who has also been linked with the Scunthorpe job, has led the betting markets rated at evens to succeed Way.

Perhaps tellingly is the fact caretaker manager Neale Marmon has drifted from 4/1 to 6/1 with former Ipswich Town coach Paul Hurst (8/1) and Phil Brown (12/1) also among the contenders.

How Bristol Rovers are 'a different animal' from the side that lost to Doncaster Rovers

Yeovil would offer a good personal and professional challenge for Clarke with the club keeping him in the south west and providing a solid foundation for him to relaunch his coaching career following his Rovers exit in December .

Yeovil lie 22nd in League Two, two points above the relegation zone, having lost their last four matches. Clarke is exactly the sort of personality who could go into a broken dressing room, lift spirits and organise a survival bid.

Beyond the short-term impact, he also, of course, has promotion credentials having guided the Gas from the National League into League One, something that will undoubtedly appeal to Yeovil's board of directors.

Speaking to the Not the Top 20 Podcast in January, Clarke revealed he has had plenty of interest since leaving the Mem but wanted to take his time in deciding which move was right for him.

One manager who has ruled themselves out of the race is former Bristol City manager and Torquay boss Gary Johnson.

'I want more muscle and brawn' - Graham Coughlan explains Sam Matthews' Bristol Rovers departure

Johnson enjoyed two spells at the Glovers, from 2001-05 and 2012-15, and managed Way as a player but is focused on finishing the job at Torquay having lifted the Gulls to the top of the National League South.

Johnson told Devon Live : As much as I respect Yeovil Town, where I had a great time and enjoyed great success, I have done my time there.

"I would not dream of leaving Torquay United anyway, where we have done a lot so far but there is so much more to do.

I am on a new project here, and when you get great support from everyone at a club - players, supporters and top management - that's where you want to be.

"Tell everyone at Torquay not to worry!"
