Former Bristol Rovers forward Tom Nichols wanted by League Two Cheltenham Town – reports

Former Bristol Rovers forward Tom Nichols could return to Cheltenham Town, according to reports.

The 27-year-old left the Gas midway through last season when boss Ben Garner told him he was not in his plans and moved to the Jonny-Rocks Stadium on loan until the end of the season.

Nichols’ contract expired in June and he was released by Rovers, three years after he moved to the Mem from Peterborough United.

The former Exeter City star scored nine goals in 115 appearances for the Gas.

He has had interest from Macclesfield Town this summer before they were given a points deduction on appeal which relegated them to the National League.

Nichols also had a trial at newly-promoted League One side Swindon Town, but has not agreed a deal at the County Ground.

Gloucestershire Live reports Cheltenham, who did not immediately tie him down to a contract at the end of his loan spell are keen to see Nichols return.

The Robins have plenty of strikers and it is believed Nichols would be viewed more as a number 10, competing for minutes with West Bromwich Albion loanee Finn Azaz following the sale of ex-Rovers playmaker Ryan Broom to Peterborough United.

Should Nichols return to Whaddon Road, he will link up with fellow former Gas midfielder Liam Sercombe. He has moved to Cheltenham on a free transfer after being released from the Mem in June.
