Former Bristol Rovers favourite signs for League Two rivals on a free transfer

Former Bristol Rovers favourite James Clarke will be playing at the Mem next season but in the colours of Newport County alongside another two ex-Gas players in Ed Upson and Joe Day.

Clarke has signed a one-year contract at Rodney Parade after his deal at Walsall had expired, with the popular defender having moved to the Bescot Stadium in 2019 after leaving Rovers.

There had been claims that the 31-year-old, who's still based in the Bristol area, was primed for a return to Rovers but Bristol Live understands that was never a consideration of the management.

Clarke made 126 appearances in the blue and white quarters, impressing with his commitment, consistent and versatility across the backline, and was named Player of the Year in 2018/19, which proved his final season for the club.

"I’m buzzing to have signed with Newport County AFC, I’ve seen where the club has been for the past three years, they’ve been very competitive so I’m happy to get the deal over the line," Clarke said.

“The club has always been competitive, they’re always up and around the ball and I like the gaffer as well. I played against the gaffer a few times before and they’ve always been a team that I’ve wanted to play for.

“The manager has told me what he likes about my playing style and where he sees me playing. Conversations have been positive so I’m excited to get out there and get started.

“I’ve been lucky enough within my career to have been promoted from League Two so I can give as much advice from my experience as possible that I can add to the mix.”

Rovers face Newport on October 23 at the Mem before the return fixture in south Wales on March 5, 2022.
