Former Bristol Rovers defender joins West Country rivals Swindon Town

Cian Harries has signed for Swindon Town after being released by Bristol Rovers at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old defender made 56 appearances across a two-and-a-half-year spell with the Gas, playing 16 times as Rovers secured automatic promotion from League Two last season. His season started with an incredible long-range volley at Mansfield Town on the opening day but he became a fringe player and his last appearance for the Gas came in February.

The former Swansea City and Coventry City prospect was let go at the end of the campaign but he has found a new home at Rovers' West Country rivals Swindon, who were beaten by Port Vale in the League Two play-off semi-finals in May.

“I’m really pleased to be here and thankful for the opportunity the manager has given me to come to this great club," he told the club's website. “Swindon have a fantastic fanbase and great potential, so this wasn’t a tough decision to make and I was really eager to get the deal over the line.

“I’ve had some really good experience playing abroad and being part of a side that got promoted last term, so I like to think I’m adaptable and know what is required to compete at the top end of the league.”

Harries could face his former club in the coming months with the Gas and Swindon drawn in the same EFL Trophy group.

Scott Lindsey is now in charge at The County Ground after Ben Garner's departure for Charlton Athletic and he is delighted to add Harries to his ranks.

“Cian is a player I’ve liked for some time and played against us last season," he said. “He’s a left-footed centre-half that will give us more balance and is an incredibly gifted footballer, so I’m delighted to have him join us and this signing really strengthens us at the back."
