Former Bristol Rovers defender follows well-trodden path by signing for League Two club

Former Bristol Rovers defender Calum Macdonald has signed for League Two Mansfield Town less than a week after his exit at the Gas was confirmed.

Left-back Macdonald was one of three players who Rovers revealed last Saturday would be leaving the club when their contracts expire next month, but he has quickly found a new club signing a two-year contract at Field Mill.

Macdonald joined Rovers on transfer deadline day in January, agreeing a short-term deal until the end of the season. However, he failed to force his way consistently into Joey Barton’s first-team thinking and played just 148 minutes in League One over four appearances.

The 25-year-old follows former Rovers favourites Alfie Kilgour and Ollie Clarke in making the move to Mansfield from BS7, while John-Joe O’Toole and former loanee Hiram Boateng are also on the Stags books. Graham Coughlan also infamously left Rovers to drop down a division and sign for the Stags in December 2019.

“I’m absolutely delighted to sign for the Stags,” Macdonald said. “The club has kept a strong squad together and this seems like the perfect place for me at this stage of my career.”

Macdonald has significant experience at League Two level having played 88 times at that level with Tranmere Rovers, plus a 13-game stint with Stockport County before signing for Rovers. The need for a new left-back has been amplified by the loss of Stephen McLauglin for the whole of pre-season due to a knee injury.

“Calum is a good, experienced left-back at this level having previously played over seventy League Two matches for Tranmere,” said Mansfield manager Nigel Clough. “With Macca (Stephen McLaughlin) missing the start of the season due to injury, we needed someone who can go straight into the line-up at left-back and Calum fits the bill.”
