Former Bristol Rovers coach holds talks with Danny Cowley over Portsmouth role

David Coles has held talks with Portsmouth regarding a coaching role after he was let go by Bristol Rovers.

The goalkeeping coach, highly regarded throughout the game, was relieved of his duties by Gas boss Joey Barton after they were relegated to League Two, with the manager bringing in his own man.

The 56-year-old, according to the Portsmouth News, has held talks with Danny Cowley about joining his backroom staff at Fratton Park.

Coles has worked for Pompey before when Harry Redknapp was in charge, and he has also had spells with England under-18s, Bristol City and Forest Green Rovers.

He joined Rovers in 2020 following the departure of Adrian Tucker, working under Ben Garner. He was part of Paul Tisdale's coaching staff, too, but left the club in January for personal reasons.

But, after Tisdale's sacking, the former Aldershot and Yeovil Town keeper returned to be part of Barton's coaching staff.

Upon his exit from Rovers, Manchester United academy goalkeeping scout wrote on social media he was "flabbergasted" by the club's decision.

"Colsey is one of the finest GK coaches in the country with 30 years experience and a CV to match," he said.

"This is where I have to make the distinction between GK coach and GK trainer. Colsey is the in the first group. He nurtures, develops helping young goalkeepers find the pathway from youth to first-team football at all levels of the game.

"If anyone out there is looking for a top coach, look no further than Colsey."

Former Liverpool gloveman Tony Warner has been linked with the goalkeeping coach role at Rovers, with Barton assessing candidates since the end of the season.

League One Pompey are without a goalkeeping coach following Cowley's own coaching reshuffle in May, with John Keeley leaving the club before taking up a job at Ipswich Town.
