Former Bristol City star Joe Bryan the play-off hero after Fulham goals down Brentford

Former Bristol City left-back Joe Bryan was the play-off hero last night after his two goals in extra time sent Fulham to the Premier League.

Bryan, who played every minute of the play-off final at Wembley, was unable to help his team break the deadlock in normal time with both teams cancelling each other out, wary of slipping up and making a mistake.

With the game into extra-time, it looked to everybody that the stalemate would continue and force the game into penalties; then up stepped Bryan.

With a free-kick from 40-yards out, the defender shaped up to cross into the box before seeing Brentford keeper David Raya out of his goal, anticipating a whipped ball in.

Bryan pounced and curled the ball into the near post, wrong-footing Raya and causing wild celebrations, sending Fulham fans, and Bristol City fans wild with pride.

But he wasn't done there, and topped off the win by finishing off a smart passing move to put Fulham 2-0 up. Despite a late Dalsgaard goal, the Cottagers held on and will now be playing their football in the top tier of English football, being promoted under Scott Parker at the first time of asking after relegation last year.

Bristol City fans took to Twitter to congratulate Bryan, with his goals promoting him and former Bristol City youngster Bobby Decordova-Reid into the Premier League.

Bryan made the switch to Craven Cottage in 2018 after coming through the ranks at City, being part of the 2014/15 double winning side and key part of the 2017/18 Carabao Cup run.

Fulham saw off Cardiff City in the play-off semi-finals to reach Wembley and under Scott Parker, will now look to avoid repeating the same mistakes they made during their Premier League relegation season.

After the game, Parker said: "We've done what we've done tonight, but there's still improvement, and that's what makes me so proud and happy.

"For all of the good players and everything you see, what makes me so happy I see a group of players who only a year ago were struggling psychologically, didn't have a mindset or mentality.

"I've driven this team every single day and what makes me proud is I stood on the touchline tonight and seen a team that represents what I've been saying over the last 12 months."
