Former Bristol City player earns Ghana call-up after starring in League Two

Jojo Wollacott's departure as one of the 19 players to leave Bristol City this summer didn't cause much of a ripple but the 25-year-old has been one of the main success stories among that group having made the decision to drop down two divisions to Swindon Town.

After a turbulent summer, in which he was one of just nine senior professionals at the County Ground before Clem Morfuni was able to buy a controlling stake in the club from Lee Power, Wollacott has developed into one of the best goalkeepers in League Two.

The Bristol-born goalkeeper has started all nine of Swindon's games, keeping four clean sheets, conceding seven goals with a save percentage of 84.6% as the Robins rebuild under former Bristol Rovers manager Ben Garner.

That form has alerted new Ghana head coach Milovan Rajevac who has named Wollacott in his provisional 32-man squad for their World Cup qualifying double-header against Zimbabwe in October.

He is one of four goalkeepers in the squad, with Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey, Brentford's Tariq Fosu-Henry and Andre and Jordan Ayew now among his teammates.

Wollacott came through the City academy having joined in his early teens and played regularly for the Under-18 and Under-23 set-up, while also experiencing a string of loan spells at Bath City, Forest Green, Gloucester City and Swindon, before joining them permanently.

His never made a senior appearance for City, having been mainly third-choice behind Dan Bentley, Niki Maenpaa and then Max O'Leary towards the end of his time at the club but did make a number of matchday squads during the 2019/20 campaign.

Wollacott will be back in Bristol this weekend as he lines up for Swindon at the Memorial Stadium against Bristol Rovers.
