Former Bristol City midfielder calls on Robins to renew interest in Middlesbrough star despite links to Leeds United striker

Former Bristol City midfielder Gary Owers has called on the club to renew their interest in Britt Assombalonga.

The Robins looked into signing Middlesbrough striker Assombalonga in January last season but deemed a move for the 26-year-old to be too expensive.

Yet Owers, who played 130 times for the club in a four-year spell from 1994 to 1998 says that he feels that, with Boro struggling in the Championship this season, Assombalonga could well be available to City - despite their interest in Leeds United's on-loan striker Eddie Nketiah.

"Obviously they're working very well behind the scenes," Owers said to BBC Radio Bristol.

"Recruitment is an ongoing process and you can't describe or explain how much business seems to be done in the last five minutes of any transfer window.

"Look at what just happened with Marlon Pack leaving and Benik Afobe arriving, and you think of how much time you have to do business but it's always done in the closing moments.

"I've written a few names down, people I think could be good options - these are my personal picks, nothing has influenced them.

"Britt Assombalonga, they've been linked with, I think he's a strong and powerful forward, Middlesbrough are having struggles, it might be the right time to go and see if he's available.

"I like Jutkiewicz at Birmingham, I think he's the type of forward who would relish playing with Eliasson because he pulls on the far post and every time Eliasson put a cross in, you can guarantee he'd be trying to get on the end of it."
