Former Bristol City manager among early candidates for Sheffield Wednesday job

Former Bristol City boss Lee Johnson is said to have indicated his interest in the vacant managerial position at Sheffield Wednesday.

The Sheffield club sacked boss Garry Monk on Monday night after a poor early run of form.

Monk, who has managed Leeds United and Birmingham City in the past, spent 14 months at Hillsborough winning only 18 games out of 58 games.

Johnson, meanwhile, has been without a job since departing Ashton Gate in July after four years of service.

The Sheffield Star report that Johnson is one of a number of candidates to have been tentatively “sounded out” by the Owls.

The 39-year-old guided City into a play-off fight before a disastrous end to the campaign saw them slide out of promotion contention and to a 12th placed finish.

Johnson oversaw 217 games as Robins boss will be a top target for any Championship club with a managerial vacancy.

Wednesday's hunt for a new boss has seen them linked with Tony Pulis, Nigel Adkins, Paul Cook and Phil Neville.

Bristol Live understands former Bristol City manager and Bristol Rovers manager Pulis is among the leading contenders with the ex-Stoke City boss having been out of the game since May 2019 and also interested in the job.

But Johnson has already been keen to make clear his intention to return to Championship management.

“My heart is in coaching in the Championship or as high as I can in England," he told the Times.

“The Championship is the best league in the world: varied styles, varied budgets, varied tactics but such a big prize at the end of it.

“Expectation is ridiculous for everybody. It’s relentless as a manager.”

Wednesday also have midfielder Barry Bannan at their disposal, a player Johnson has regularly praised as one the Championship's most talented players.

Speaking back in June, Johnson said: “[Bristol City] need a Barry Bannan-type player if you know what I mean.

"He’s very good orchestrating play."
