Former Bristol City hero Korey Smith having medical ahead of signing for League One club

Former Bristol City captain Korey Smith is having a medical at Derby County on Friday ahead of signing for the League One club, according to reports.

The midfielder is available on a free transfer this summer after being released by Swansea City, and The Telegraph's John Percy reports Smith is heading to the League One Rams.

The 31-year-old made almost 200 appearances for the Robins across six seasons at Ashton Gate, earning the captain's armband. He joined from Oldham Athletic in 2014 and was a pivotal player in the Steve Cotterill's double-winning side that romped into the Championship.

He would feature regularly in the second tier in the ensuing years and he cemented his place in the club's history with a dramatic last-gasp winner against Manchester United to book a place in the League Cup semi-finals in 2017.

Smith would leave City in the summer of 2020 when he said the club "Have told me they are not able to offer me a new contract at this time".

He would sign a two-year deal with Swansea City and he made 77 appearances for the South Wales club, but he was looking for a new club again this summer after being released.

The former Norwich City and Yeovil Town midfielder is now set to move to League One to join Derby, who have completed a huge amount of business quickly after the club was rescued from administration last month.

Deals have been completed for the likes of Conor Hourihane, David McGoldrick, James Chester and James Collins, with Smith set to become the Rams' 11th summer acquisiton.
