Former Bristol City goalkeeping hero Mike Gibson reflects on his illustrious career

The latest edition of the Subs Bench has landed.

The popular Made In Bristol show has arrived on Bristol Live with Richard Latham and Nigel Turner interviewing a host of former Bristol Rovers and Bristol City players from across the generations.

This week the duo have spoken to a Bristol City stalwart who played more than 300 games for the club between 1962 and 1972 - Mike Gibson.

Goalkeeper Gibson, now 79, was born in Derby and started his career at Gresley Rovers before moving to Nuneaton Borough and then Shrewsbury Town.

In 1962 Fred Ford signed Gibson from Shrewsbury Town for the pricely sum £6,000 for Bristol City.

And he made quite the impression, being ever present in the side for three season and helping City win promotion in the 1964/65 season to the Football League Second Division.

One of the other highlights during Gibson's nine year Robins career was helping the club reach the League Cup semi finals in 1970-71 when City were beaten 3-1 on aggregate over two legs by Tottenham Hotspurs.

He made more than 300 appearances for the club before leaving for Gillingham in July 1972.

A shoulder injury ended his playing career but he returned to Bristol as a postman.

Since then he has passed on his experience as a goalkeeping coach at the club.
