Former Bristol City goalkeeper appointed assistant manager at League Two Swindon Town

Former Bristol City goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin has been named the new assistant manager of League Two Swindon Town, just a few weeks after his Robins release was confirmed.

Gilmartin has linked up with his former manager at Colchester, John McGreal, who was appointed at the County Ground to succeed John Sheridan following Swindon's relegation from League One.

Gilmartin was among the 11 players not included on the Robins retained list last month with the 34-year-old serving as second, third and fourth-choice goalkeeper during his two years at Ashton Gate.

The Dubliner never made a first-team appearance but assisted goalkeeper coach Pat Mountain in training and was seen a big dressing room presence who was well-liked within the squad.

Gilmartin also established something of a cult following during the pandemic as an analyst on Robins TV during broadcasts of City matches.

“I know what type of character he is. Very very hard working, studious of the game and a thoroughly professional coach," said McGreal.

“I know all the attributes that he’ll bring as a coach and as a person. It’s the trust factor as well, I know he’s someone that will get the best out of the squad and the staff in and around him as well.”

Gilmartin, who has also coached the Republic of Ireland Under-19s, joins another former Bristol-based goalkeeper at Swindon with ex-Rovers No1 Steve Mildenhall also on McGreal's staff.
