Former Bristol City defender's release from Chelsea sparks scramble with Sheffield United, Derby County, Aston Villa and Fulham all interested

Todd Kane has been released by Chelsea.

The 25-year-old defender spent a two-month loan at then-League One Bristol City in the 2014/15 season, making just seven appearances before returning to Stamford Bridge.

Kane must have impressed at the Robins, as he was immediately sent back out on loan - this time to Championship side Nottingham Forest.

However, he has failed to make the grade at Chelsea and, after 18 years at the club stretching back to under-8s level, he has now been released.

The news has sparked a scramble for his signature, with a number of clubs said to be interested in signing him.

Football Insider report that Aston Villa are the front runners in the race, but that Sheffield United, Fulham and Derby County are all keeping tabs on his situation.

Chelsea were reportedly keen to keep hold of Kane but missed the deadline to take up their option of extending his contract, meaning he is now set to leave Stamford Bridge on a free transfer.

Kane spent last season on loan at Hull City, enjoying a successful campaign in which he made 41 appearances and scored three goals.

His impressive form has caught the eye, with Dean Smith keen to add a right-back to his squad after releasing Alan Hutton, Ritchie de Laet and Micah Richards.
