Former Bristol City boss Steve Coppell hopes to find new role in football

Steve Coppell's last managerial role in this country remains his four-month stint at Bristol City back in 2010.

That disastrously short spell may have set the Robins reeling but Coppell has not returned to the UK to work in a dugout since then.

The 64-year-old has taken Director of Football roles at Crawley Town and Portsmouth since that short spell at Ashton Gate, however, and it may well be that the former Manchester United forward takes on a similar position at a club in the near future.

Coppell spoke to The Athletic on his experiences in football and explained that he is looking for a new post.

"I'm keeping myself busy but I'd like to work," said the former England winger, with 42 caps and seven goals to his name.

"The most important thing in football is recruitment. Can I see a player? Yes, 100 per cent.

"But what does the 'Director of Football' role really entail? Mark Goldberg and Ron Noades both appointed me that at Palace, but the day-to-day jobs were very different.

"I still think people look upon the role with suspicion. Certainly as an ex-manager I would be looked upon with even more suspicion by whoever is overseeing the first team, as a threat waiting in the wings.

"Anyway, there hasn't been interest," he admitted.

Coppell admitted to having 'blips' in his career - which may well explain the brief time in BS3.

"I've obviously had my 'blips'. I'm fully aware of my 'blips'. But I don't really put myself out there. I don't court favour. To a certain extent, I don't play the game. I don't want to play the game.

"Or when I do I want to play it on my terms," he told the online sports website in a long interview on his career in football.
