Former Bristol City and Leeds United defender Norman Hunter in hospital after contracting coronavirus

Former Bristol City defender Norman Hunter is in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.

Hunter made 122 appearances between 1976-79, scoring four times, and was also part of Sir Alf Ramsey's England squad for the 1966 World Cup and went on to win 28 caps in total.

Nicknamed "Bite yer legs" for his fearsome style of tackling, Hunter was part of Alan Dicks' First Division side, the last time the Robins were in the top-flight.

City said in a statement: "Bristol City Football Club would like to wish Norman Hunter well in his treatment for COVID-19."

"Keep battling Norman, we are all with you," a statement from another of his former clubs, Leeds United, read on Friday.

"We would like to take this opportunity to remind the public and the media to respect the wishes of Norman and his family and to give them the space they need during this difficult time."

The 76-year-old made 726 appearances during a 15 year spell at Elland Road, where he also won two league titles and played in the 1975 European Cup final defeat by Bayern Munich.

Hunter also played for Barnsley, and then managed the Tykes along with Rotherham United following his retirement from playing in 1983.
