Former Bristol City and Aston Villa striker spurns Nottingham Forest to seal Qatar move

Jonathan Kodjia will not be lining up against Bristol City in the second half of the season as the striker has completed a move from Aston Villa to Qatari side Al Gharafa.

Kodjia was linked with a move to Championship side Nottingham Forest after falling down the pecking order at Premier League Villa but the Ivorian has instead plumped for a move to the Middle East.

The 30-year-old will play under former Fulham and Watford manager Slavisa Jokanovic and has signed a two-and-a-half year deal.

Kodjia was unveiled on Monday in Doha and the move ends his four-and-a-half years in English football which began when Bristol City brought him to the Championship from Angers for £2m.

In his only full season at Ashton Gate, Kodjia scored 20 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions before earning a move to Aston Villa in 2016 for a fee of around £11m.

That, of course, represented a sizeable profit for City and in many ways laid the foundations for the business model adopted by the Lansdowns and CEO Mark Ashton of buying value talent and then selling at a healthy profit.

Indeed, that fee remained a record sale until this summer when Lloyd Kelly joined Bournemouth for £13m plus add-ons and Adam Webster moved to Brighton & Hove Albion for £20m.

At Villa, Kodjia enjoyed a fruitful first season with 19 in 36 matches but broke his ankle towards the end of the 2017/18 campaign which then began a series of injury problems for the forward.

Although he was unable to maintain his consistent scoring record from his first two seasons in English football, Kodjia played a key role in Villa's promotion campaign last term under Dean Smith.
