Former Bristol City academy player Herbie Kane says he regrets joining Liverpool

Former Bristol City academy player Herbie Kane says he regrets joining Liverpool at 15-years-old from the Robins.

The now Barnsley midfielder explained that his time at Anfield 'wasn't the best', in an honest interview featuring in the Tykes' official matchday programme.

Kane signed for the Anfield giants in 2013 and even made his debut for the Reds first-team against MK Dons in the League Cup last season but the former England U17 player was sold to the Championship side in October for a reported fee of around £1.25m.

Kane was even nominated for the Golden Boy award in 2018 alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ben Woodburn but was unable to break into Jurgen Klopp's plans on a regular basis, making just two senior appearances before leaving for Oakwell.

And now the Bristolian has reflected on his time at the Premier League champions.

"It's not something I've really looked back at before, but I think with reflection, I'd probably stay at Bristol City if I had to make the same decision again.

"In terms of Liverpool, I've got to be honest, it wasn't the best.

"A lot of things are promised to you when they're trying to sign you, but nothing ever came of it. But that can be football in general to be honest.

"The only way I can explain what it was like for me there was how when you're playing as a kid and you're picking the teams, and you're the last one picked.

"It was that kind of feeling. It wasn't the best for me there. But it was a valuable experience and I probably wouldn't be here at Barnsley without it," he explained.

Kane has made three league starts since joining Barnsley permanently - appearing 10 times from the bench, and is yet to register a goal or assist for Valerien Ismael's side.

But the 22-year-old has time on his side and impressed on loan at Hull in the 2019/20 campaign as he netted twice.
