Former Bridgeton job centre to be turned into flats under new plans

A job centre that was forced to close back in 2018 has now been earmarked for new flats.

The empty building on Muslin Street in Bridgeton could be turned into nearly 50 flats.

Developers are looking to turn the building into 39 one-bedroom and 10 two-bedroom flats.

The premises was used by the Department for Work and Pensions as a job centre from the 1980s before it was forced to close in February 2018.

A planning statement submitted to Glasgow City Council says that the building is unlikely to be returned to commercial use due to a 'lack of demand' and should be used for residential purposes instead.

It adds: "The proposed scheme will complement and contribute to the local area providing additional good quality private rental apartments that are in great demand.

“It provides a sustainable re-use of a redundant building, with little likelihood of the building being returned to a commercial use due to lack of demand.

“The proposals require minimal structural intervention and provide 49 residential apartments in an area with little other alternative than housing associations, with long waiting lists.”

The proposal will now go before the planning bosses.
