Former bricklayer steps up to senior surveyor role

A property professional who entered the industry as an apprentice bricklayer has joined DM Hall as a senior surveyor in its Dumfries office.

John Kempsell, 52, trained on building sites after leaving school and four years later he enrolled at the technical college in his hometown of Dumfries to qualify with an Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) in Construction, followed by a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Construction Management.

He gain surveying experience as a technician with Dumfries & Galloway Council Assessors Department and in 2004 transferred to the Building Control Department as a building inspector.

Kempsell studying on a day release basis Glasgow Caledonian University and graduated in 2007 with a BSc in Building Control before joining South Lanarkshire Council as a Building Standards Surveyor. He has since worked for Allied Surveyors in Dumfries and retrained as a Valuation Surveyor, joining the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) in 2012.

He said: “It’s early days for me here at DM Hall but I’m already enjoying being part of the team and serving the clients in our region. My geographical focus is on the western side of Dumfries & Galloway - I am responsible for all types of residential surveys, including home reports, valuations and energy performance certificates”.
