Former Bolton Wanderers footballer Marvin Sordell tells GMB how moving to a Premier League club affected his mental health

Former Bolton Wanderers footballer Marvin Sordell has spoken out about how his mental health was partly affected by the pressures of moving to a Premier League club.

Sordell joined Bolton Wanderers  in January 2012 from Watford in a £3m move.

But after later stints at Burnley, Coventry City and most recently Northampton Town on loan last year, the striker made the decision to retire - citing his mental health struggles as a factor.

Sordell is now part of a BBC documentary which airs tonight led by Prince William, Football, Prince William and our Mental Health , as the royal campaigns for people to open up a conversation around mental health issues, particularly in football.

Speaking on Thursday's Good Morning Britain, Sordell said that his struggles was down to a "combination" of factors.

He told host Ben Shephard: "I think for me, it was a combination of person experiences, things I had experienced in life, and a lot of pressure I faced having moving away from the environment at Watford I had.

"Playing in the championship, being a young player, to then going into a Premier League big club at Bolton and the transfer fee hanging over my head and the expectancy of what I needed to deliver.

"I found it difficult to deal with and being away from home and not having a support network directly behind me made it equally as tough."

Sordell went on to discuss an attempt to take his own life, something he has been very honest and open about.

"I have been very open about that experience and my own experience with depression and suicide attempts as well as I think it is very important to see that you can overcome it, you can get to a better place," he said.

"I was in a very, very dark place and a deep hole but where I am today, I am a very happy person and every time I have this discussion I say that negative experience, that whole period of time in my life, kicked off a sequence of events that led to me becoming a lot happier."

Sordell is among those taking part in the BBC documentary led by the Duke of Cambridge as well as England goalkeeper Joe Hart and Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV. Football, Prince William and our Mental Health airs on BBC One tonight at 8.05pm
