Former Bolton star in Neil Lennon pop as Celtic manager's ill-fated Wanderers stay is revisited

Former Bolton defender David Wheater has claimed spells under Neil Lennon and Dougie Freedman "weren't the best of times".

The 33-year-old, signed by Oldham as George Edmudnson's replacement last summer, has lifted the lid on his experiences with the Wanderers under Lennon and the former Scotland international.

The commanding stopper was a regular with England's U21 side during his Middlesbrough days but his career was on the wane by the time Owen Coyle lured him to Bolton.

He was part of the side that was relegated in 2012 and the teams that both Lennon and Freedman would go on to manage.

And now Wheater has had a non-too subtle dig at the pair during an Instagram Q&A session.

A fan asked: "How awful was it really working under Freeman and Lennon?"

And Wheater said: "Yeah, they weren't the best of times."

Freedman spent two years at the helm before Lennon arrived for his first post- Celtic role in October 2014.

And the Irishman manfully pulled them clear of relegation worries in his first season before the severity of their fiancial plight became apparent and the Hoops icon departed in 2016.
