Former Black Cats boss Sam Allardyce calls for coronavirus circuit break after rise in coronavirus cases

Former Sunderland manager Sam Allardyce has called for football to have a "circuit break."

Speaking to SkySports after his West Brom side were humbled 5-0 by Leeds United on Tuesday night, Allardyce said he was "very concerned" for himself and football in general.

The 66-year-old said: "Everyone's safety is more important than anything else.

"When I listen to the news the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus [so] we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break.

"I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid. I'm very concerned for myself and football in general. If that's what needs to be done we need to do it.

"We had one positive this week and it seems to be creeping around no matter how hard we try."

There are an increasing number of calls for the EFL to temporarily stop the League One season after a number of games were called off after coronavirus outbreaks at seven clubs.

However, the governing body has said football will carry on as normal until told otherwise by the Government.

Sunderland will now have to play 30 games in 128 days - a game every 4.2 days.
