Former leader of Birmingham City Council Mike Whitby has taken his seat in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer.
Lord Whitby was part of a list of 30 new members of the Upper House announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in August.
The 65-year-old was leader of Birmingham City Council from 2004 to 2012.
He dressed in the traditional ermine robes for the short ceremony of introduction, which involves swearing allegiance to the Queen.
During the ceremony he was flanked by his supporters, fellow Tories Lord Baker of Dorking, the former education secretary, and Lord Edmiston.
