Former Benfica manager linked with Newcastle United job makes interesting claim

Newcastle United have been linked with a move for ex-Benfica manager Jorge Jesus - according to reports in Portugal.

The Record newspaper in Portugal say that Jesus has been contacted to see if he would be interested in a move back to the Premier League.

The 64-year-old has been out of work since his exit from Al-Hilal.

Jesus knocked the Magpies out of the Europa League in 2013 as Benfica boss and is now looking for a chance to work in England.

Jesus has made a claim that he has been offered the chance to work in the Premier League soon. He said: "In England, I have the chance to start work in May.

"I’m not going to say which team (but) they’re in a difficult position in the Premier League and will possibly go down."

Jesus has a wealth of experience managing in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and SC Braga but is yet to step up to one of Europe's bigger leagues.

Rafa Benitez is yet to agree a deal with Newcastle but while club sources say there is an offer on the table if he wants to stay, the Toon boss said last week: "The only club that I am talking to now about my future is Newcastle United Football Club, and I am waiting for an answer."
