Former Bega doctor Graeme Reeves has appeared in a Sydney court accused of the manslaughter of a former patient.

Kerry Ann McAllister died aged 38 after giving birth nearly 20 years ago.

A coroner found she died of septicaemia when a bacterial infection went undiagnosed after she gave birth at a private hospital in the Sydney suburb of Baulkham Hills in 1996.

The coroner referred the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Reeves, 64, did not speak during a brief appearance before the Downing Centre district court on Friday morning.

The court heard he planned to seek legal aid ahead of an expected three-week trial.

Reeves will remain on bail ahead of his next court appearance on 5 June.
