Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake died early Sunday at age 62, the team said in a statement.

Drake coached the Bears’ receivers from 2004-12. He was not retained when Marc Trestman replaced head coach Lovie Smith.

“Darryl was a close friend and had a tremendous impact on my coaching career,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. “He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather, and it is difficult to put into words the grief our entire team is going through right now.

“Darryl loved the game of football and every player he ever coached.”

The Steelers canceled Sunday’s practice.

Drake coached at Georgia, Baylor and Texas before entering the NFL ranks with the Bears. He coached Cardinals receivers from 2013-17 before joining the Steelers.
