Former Bears backup QB Chase Daniel to sign with Lions

Does anyone have it better than Chase Daniel when it comes to being a backup quarterback?

Over the course of his 10-year career, Daniel has made $34 million — and he’s only started in five games in a reserve role. Now, he’s set to make another $13 million after reaching an agreement with the Lions.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Daniel has agreed to terms on a three-year deal worth $13.05 million that will have him backing up Matthew Stafford.

Three of those five starts came with the Bears over last two seasons, including once against the Lions. In that Thanksgiving Day game in 2018, Daniel led the Bears to a 23-16 win over the Lions. He completed 27 of 37 passes for 230 yards, a 73% completion percentage and two touchdowns.

The Bears, meanwhile, still haven’t made a move at quarterback. Currently, Mitchell Trubisky is the only quarterback under contract for Chicago, which in itself indicates the Bears need to bring in a veteran backup.

But given Trubisky’s struggles during his three-year career, Chicago could be looking to bring in a new starter altogether. Names like Andy Dalton and Nick Foles have been floating around, not necessarily immediate starters for the Bears. But with Cam Newton now available on the trade market, that might change things significantly.
