Former BBC Radio Manchester, XFM and Key 103 presenter Michelle Mullane dies following cancer battle - her daughter has shared some poignant words

Tributes have been paid to a former radio presenter who has died following a battle with bowel cancer.

Michelle Mullane, 50, worked for XFM and Key 103 and made regular appearances on BBC Radio Manchester throughout her career.

The mum-of-one, who lived in Alderly Edge, was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in June last year after being rushed to hospital with severe stomach pains.

Her heartbroken daughter Liv Winter, 23, announced that her mum had passed away at the East Cheshire Hospice on Christmas Eve.

Since then, hundreds of people - including former colleagues and celebrities such as Jason Manford - have paid tribute to Michelle.

"With immense sadness unfortunately I am announcing the passing of my amazing mum," Liv wrote.

"She went peacefully and gracefully at the East Cheshire Hospice on December 24 at around 9.30pm.

"My mum made it her mission to fight cancer with a positive attitude filled with faith and strength publicly sharing her story in the hope to help others around the world.

"She did exactly that. With that in mind, please take this time after reading the post to hug your loved ones, enjoy each moment (even the ones over looked) and drink that wine!"

Earlier this year, Michelle backed a campaign to help raise money for Cancer Research UK during the coronavirus pandemic.

Leading the tributes on social media, comedian Jason Manford wrote: "Just found out that my dear friend and ex-BBC Manchester presenter Michelle Mullane sadly passed away on Christmas Eve.

"I have so many fond memories of Michelle from when I was starting out in stand up in the late 90s.

"Michelle was the first person to get me on the airwaves and we spent many an evening laughing, flirting, and joking over brews; on air and off."

He added: "She was an incredible supporter of new talent and gave a leg up to so many of us northern comedians at a time where it felt like you weren't in London, you didn't stand a chance.

"She will be dearly missed by so many people, not least her young daughter Liv. She only messaged me the other week to congratulate me on Royal Variety and to say how proud she was of me.

"Even in her state, she still thought of others."

Manford said he and Michelle had been trying to organise a charity gig in aid of Kidney Cancer UK and Bowel Cancer Research, which had to be postponed due to coronavirus.

"The second we are able to, I will 100% make sure this happens in your name Michelle," he said.

Granada Reports journalist, Elaine Wilcox said on Twitter: "So sad to hear Michelle Mullane died on Christmas Eve.

"She was a brilliant broadcaster and wonderful friend to our dear Tony Morris. Thoughts with all her friends & family. 2020 we can’t wait for you to end."

Michelle was told she had six months to live when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer in June 2019.

"I never in a million years thought I’d have cancer – it was the furthest thing from my mind," she told the M.E.N in July 2020.

"Looking back now, I’d been feeling unusually tired and experiencing some cramping for a few months, but I put that down to living a busy life.

"Then one night I was throwing up for hours and experiencing the most excruciating pain in my stomach. The pain was worse than anything I’d ever experienced, even worse than childbirth."

The 50-year-old was rushed to Macclesfield Hospital, where doctors discovered a life-threatening obstruction on her bowel.

She had a stent fitted to push the tumour to one side and had been undergoing chemotherapy at The Christie in Withington.
