Former Barnsley winger handed trial at Nottingham Forest

Former Barnsley winger Louis Walsh is on trial at Nottingham Forest, in a bid to secure a permanent move to the City Ground.

Walsh played 76 minutes of the Reds Under-23s' win at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon.

The 18-year-old joined the Tykes last July on a 12-month contract after coming through a successful trial, before going out on loan to non-league Guiseley in November, where he played three times, including FA Cup games against Cambridge and Fleetwood.

Prior to Monday’s win against the Owls, Walsh had come off the subs' bench in the Reds’ 3-0 defeat at Coventry City last month, playing 25 minutes as a replacement for midfielder Tyrese Fornah.

Walsh, who plays on the right flank and is known for his speed, admitted that life at Barnsley was a little different to what he had been used to.

Speaking after penning his Oakwell deal, Walsh told the Tykes' website: “Coming up from down south has been tough, having to get used to the area and culture – it’s a lot different to where I’m from and what I’m used to.

“I’m all settled now and I can’t wait to start playing again with a manager I believe in and who believes in me. I’m still 17, but I truly believe in my ability and journey.”

Walsh will hope to be given another chance to impress boss Jimmy Gilligan on Friday afternoon, when Forest host Burnley at the Nigel Doughty Academy (1pm) in their latest Professional Development League outing.
