Former bank transformed into brand new pub in Newport city centre

A long-empty former bank has been transformed into a brand new pub.

The Alexandra on 32 Commercial Street in Newport opened on Monday, October 18, and is the newest addition to the city's hospitality offering.

It follows the opening of a new American-style diner next to the Transporter Bridge, an existing cafe which was recently taken over by a former MasterChef finalist and a new retro bar on High Street.

You can read more about the businesses that have opened in Newport in the past year here.

Located inside the former Royal Bank of Scotland building, which has been empty for a number of years, The Alexandra - named after the city's once-thriving Alexandra Docks - is sure to go down a treat with punters, if these photos are anything to go by.

The pub is owned by the Blaenavon-based Rhymney Brewery. The business is most well-known for its impressive (and delicious) range of ales and bitters but also has pubs such as The Winchester in Merthyr, The Wonky Bar in Pontypridd and The Andrew Buchan in Cardiff.

It's also a boost for the city's economy, with eight jobs created at the 60-capacity venue on a street which has been hit with a number of closures in recent years.

With real ales, a lounge and, of course, a number of screens showing plenty of live sport, the pub is sure to be packed out this Saturday when Wales take on the All-Blacks in Cardiff.

If rugby's not your thing though, don't worry - the pub will also be showing Champions League football and is open from 10am every day. It stays open until 11.30pm Sunday to Thursday and until 12.30am on Friday and Saturday.
