Former Ayr United hero Glynn Hurst lands management role with English non-league side Ashton Town

Former Ayr United hero Glynn Hurst has been appointed the new manager of Ashton Town.

The Greater Manchester-based side play in Division One of the North West Counties League down south.

Hurst's appointment follows an impressive spell as reserve team coach at Marine Football Club.

The 44-year-old is fondly remembered by Ayr fans for his time with the Honest Men between 1998 and 2001.

He smashed 49 goals in 78 games after arriving from little known Emley and formed part of a potent frontline involving the likes of Gary Teale, Mickey Reynolds and Andy Walker.

Hurst eventually returned south to Stockport and went on to enjoy successful spells at Chesterfield, Notts County and Bury.

Ashton chairman, Mark Hayes, said: "Glynn is someone I have watched and followed as a player, to now, as an extremely highly rated and respected young manager."

Hurst, who brings Neil Hanson as his head of football, added: "We are delighted to be given this opportunity and we are fortunate to inherit a squad that has set the benchmark for the future."
